Update on the future of cheques - Fri 15 Jul 2011

News from Voluntary Arts: The Payments Council has this week (12 July 2011) announced that cheques will continue for as long as customers need them, and the target for possible closure of the cheque clearing in 2018 has been cancelled.

This is excellent news, prompted by some long and hard lobbying and negotiations within the voluntary sector, and also from Age UK and similar organisations.

As the clearing banks have now done away with cheque guarantee cards there are still questions about businesses accepting payments by cheque. We understand that there are more discussions taking place about this, and will bring you up to date information as soon as we can.
